Ushiku Daibutsu(Ibaraki): Enjoyable for Families with Children

Japan’s tallest bronze statue of Buddha

The Ushiku Daibutsu, located in Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a towering Buddha statue standing at 120 meters tall, recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest bronze statue in the world. It was erected to commemorate the propagation of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in the Kanto region. Visitors can enter the interior of the statue, exploring its fantastical space, and take an elevator to the observation deck at 85 meters above ground level to enjoy breathtaking views. Surrounding the statue is a vast garden area featuring a Pure Land garden, a flower field showcasing seasonal blooms, an interactive garden terrace where visitors can interact with small animals, and a bustling shopping street offering dining options and souvenirs. With so much to see and do, visitors can enjoy a full day at Ushiku Daibutsu.

Points of Interest for Children

Entering the interior of the Ushiku Daibutsu reveals a surprisingly expansive space, divided into five layers of mystical ambiance. Each floor offers a distinct atmosphere, ensuring children remain engaged throughout their exploration. Riding the elevator to the observation deck is another enjoyable experience, where visitors can admire panoramic views in all four directions.

At the Interactive Garden Terrace, visitors encounter a petting zoo, a monkey stage, and playground equipment suitable for young children. The monkey stage provides entertainment of high quality, enjoyable even for adults, and concludes with an opportunity for photographs with the monkeys. In the petting zoo, visitors can feed small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. As it is indoors, it offers enjoyment even on rainy days.

While the Ushiku Daibutsu’s surroundings boast extensive gardens, the flower field and the pond in the Pure Land Garden are particularly popular with children. The well-maintained flower field offers not only beauty but also the opportunity for flower picking during specific times in spring and autumn. The pond is home to ducks and carp, with feed available for purchase to enjoy feeding them.

Along Nakamise Street, souvenirs related to the Ushiku Daibutsu and snacks for on-the-go are available. It’s a great idea to purchase these before entering the garden for a picnic or to buy toys and souvenirs on the way back. Additionally, there are dining options available, allowing visitors to enjoy a hearty meal before leaving.

Facilities for Babies

When it comes to moving around with a stroller, the surrounding gardens and the Interactive Garden Terrace are wheelchair-accessible. However, please note that there are stairs inside the Buddha statue, so it’s advisable to bring a baby carrier for toddlers who cannot walk yet.

Facilities such as nursing rooms and diaper changing areas are also available, ensuring that parents with babies can enjoy their visit comfortably and at ease.
